The Origins of MoMA

Founded in 1929,MoMA is one of the most famous modern art museums in the world. Located on 53rd Street in West Manhattan, between the 5th and 6th Avenues, it houses the cultural treasures of the mid-19th century to the present, spanning more than 150 years, and the world's most comprehensive collection of modern art in the field of modern and contemporary art.

MoMA also has the world's most comprehensive collection of modern art, with a significant influence in the field of modern and contemporary art.

In 1928, a group of art enthusiasts and philanthropists, led by Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, Lillie P. Bliss, Marry Quinn Sullivan, wanted to establish a small art gallery to introduce modern art to the American public.

They invited Alfred H. Barr to serve as curator, a charismatic and visionary person who had laid a solid foundation for MoMA and presented the American public with another aspect of European art.

On November 7, 1929, MOMA was officially opened to the public.

At the time, other museums were not yet dedicated to collecting modern art. Alfred H. Barr boldly moved the post-impressionism concept to New York, presenting the paintings of Cézanne, Gauguin, Seurat, and Van Gogh in this exhibition called Post-Impressionism.

Lasting for a month, it attracted more than 40,000 visitors, which was definitely a huge success for MoMA at that time. After that, Alfred put forward the idea that "the exhibition should not be limited to sculpture and painting, but should be divided into several major categories", which laid the foundation for today's rich collection category.

His idea that“MoMA is a torpedo moving through time, its head the ever-advancing present, its tail the ever-receding past of 50 to 100 years ago”, has a profound impact on MoMA's permanent collection and exhibition style. As time goes, the exhibition never stopped renewing, always representing the most cutting-edge modern art.
